Jubilation to riot gear

Bad news : A state of emergency was declared by an official government decree this afternoon for all of Guinea. Post election violence has escalated in some parts of the country.

Good news : Luckily for us, we find ourselves in a quiet neighborhood. Not the case in some of our teachers’ neighborhoods.

Bad news : There is a 6PM - 9AM curfew...no vehicle traffic between those times. This means we cannot re-open the school until the curfew is lifted.

Good news : The interim government has succeeded in convincing the army not to get involved. Military are staying in their barracks and leaving security measures to local security forces and riot police.

Bad news : Security measures are left to local security forces and riot police.

Good news : Madeleine and I ventured to the grocery store this afternoon, bought 1.3 kilos of mozzarella cheese...enough to last us until a stable government comes to Guinea.

    Eveline
