I Don’t Believe I Almost Did That Moment: Almost instinctively took out a few dollars out of my pocket when approaching the customs agent when entering the Vancouver airport.
Most Challenging Moment: Not scaring off prospective teacher candidates during an interview while giving them an up front realistic picture of life in Conakry...with the obligatory mention of the blatant poverty and subsequent despair, the lack of infrastructure, the mediocre health care, the-in-your-face corruption (cost me 50,000 GF to get on the plane when I left, and 20,000 GF to retrieve my luggage from the customs guys at the airport, but that's the subject of another posting...).
I’m Getting Old Moment: Not being able to finish my plate of hamburger and fries at the Big Mouth Burger Diner in San Francisco.
Only in America Moment: Walking out of the Big Mouth Burger Diner in San Francisco and noticing that the store next door was called The Dress Barn.
Only in America Moment # 2: Watching this guy sitting in the booth next to mine at the Big Mouth Diner feasting on his breakfast trough called the ‘Big Ass Breakfast’...which was basically enough food to feed all of Cameroon and a bit of Liberia for two days.
The 27 Hour Flight Was Well Worth It Moment: Sharing a pizza with my son in Vancouver while watching a guy flic (you know, the ones that when you weave in and out of conscientiousness during the film and you end up missing half of the film but have no trouble reconnecting with the storyline when waking up..).
I’m Still Just An Old Kid at Heart Moment: Standing in the chilly San Francisco rain at the edge of one of SFO’s runways (accompanied by a few dozen other ‘old kids’), waiting for Air Force One to take off. It was worth every chilly moment of the wait.

Fish Out of Water Moment : Watching Big Rich Texas on TV in my hotel room and appreciating the acting abilities of these chic mothers and daughters. No way could this be reality TV. No living thing on this earth could be that dumb and shallow.

Am I Nuts? Moment: Sitting in my room overlooking San Francisco Bay at the Marriott, a cup of Starbucks in hand, and longing to be in Conakry... Don’t ask why, it just happened.
I’m Home! Moment: Almost getting rammed into by this run down dilapidated taxi (with of course the customary 17 passengers sharing the ride) at the first round-a-bout after exiting the Conakry airport parking lot.
Home sweet home...
