August 10th...the beginning of our fourth week. Have been spending a lot of time at school these past 5 days, getting ready to open up the school. Maintenance guys (4 small men dressed in brown uniforms) have really spruced up the place. Have occasionally got excited about work...good feeling after all the self doubt that has haunted us since our arrival.
Had lunch at the British Embassy with the ambassador and his wife, (Ian and Judith), really nice people. Beautiful place, overlooking the ocean. Good conversation.
Noticed lately that we seem not to be surprised by things so much compared with when we first arrived. We seem to be taking things more in stride that used to seem odd (or inconvenient) ....especially during the drive to and back from work. No more asking ourselves “why is this goat standing in the middle of the street?”, or “why is this lady bathing in that ditch?” Wouldn’t say we’re being complacent, but just more ‘used’ to things. Several power outages while we’re watching a film on TV...now that’s another thing...no complacency there.
